I suppose you could argue that Varian is just a nice empathetic person, or that he’s trying to defuse the situation in order to escape and/or prevent any further violence. Why sympathize with her? Why try to “save” her? (And even then I personally find the constant key changes annoying and the sound mixing to be off like the instrumentation is too loud.)ĭon’t believe me? Still think Nothing Left to Lose should have won? Then let’s break down the entire song, line for line, shall we?Ĭassandra has in the past two years, thrown away their friendship, treated him like dirt, actively persecuted him, and now very recently has abused him horribly. It’s at best just some pretty scenery to look at for three minutes with some nice singing. We gain no new insights into the characters, it has no impact on the surrounding story, and it fails at it’s singular goal which to make villain Cassandra sympathetic and compelling.
Nothing Left to Lose by contrast is just a bunch of dead air. It’s funny, (that Loonatics joke alone wins it), it’s topical, it pushes the story along…ect. Like music wise, Nothing Left to Lose just sounds nicer, it’s more complex and flows better, but story wise Suffagette City accomplishes what it sets out to do better. As my time of writing this Nothing Left to Lose was nominated for an Emmy but lost toĪnimaniacs’ “Suffragette City” and I can kind of see why.
It’s Time to Talk About the Most Controversial Song in the Series Nothing Left to LoseĪh this song. He tried to kill her! But like that’s is never brought up as an explanation so it’s not an excuse that she can hide behind. That’s literally the same tactic abusers use on their victims and I’m suppose to feel sorry for this bitch? I’m suppose to find thisīehavior complex and compelling? Yes, she’s a villain, but you don’t paint villains committing these sort of actions as sympathetic especially if they don’t have a logical reason for behaving in such a manner.Īnd the really stupid thing here is that she did have a reason to treat Varian like shit. She’s telling Varian that if she hurts him again it’ll be his own fault.
It’s gaslighting the victim for her own abusive actions. Actions speak louder than words especially in a visual medium like animation.Īnd this hypocritical contradiction isn’t Cassandra being “conflicted” nor “deep”, it’s just a straight up manipulation.
We just saw her abuse this poor teen and now you’re expecting us to take what she says at face value and believe she suddenly has a moral code and honor or some shit like that? Naw, fam. It’s really hard to sympathize with your character if you make them a violent hypocritical jackass for no reason show. Say’s the woman who has literally harmed him multiple times already and will continue hurting him again in just a few minutes. And I like Lance, but all he does is act like Edmund during this second half of this story anyways. They should have had the B plot here, not Lance and the girls. This really should have been a Eugene and Edmund episode. Why would he suddenly dip out? He spent a lifetime protecting the moonstone and it’s thief just made herself known wouldn’t he want to go after her? Nor is there any comeuppance for her immaturity and carelessness. She’s not taking this seriously, and no one is calling her out for it. In fact she treats Cassandra and this whole scenario as a mother would treat a toddler acting out. To be fair she does mention Varian and the scroll, but she treats them like an after thought. Of Course Rapunzel Doesn’t Have Her Priorities Straight Varian gives Rapunzel the new fourth incantation which the Enchanted Girl was counting on, because she is secretly Zhan Tiri and needs them to fight into order to be freed. While Eugene rescues Varian, Rapunzel and Cassandra face off with one another.
The Enchanted Girl visits Varian in a dream and gives a hint on how to discover the fourth incantation by holding the scroll against the sun. Alright, I’m back and I got the day off from my new job, (and also have downed some alcohol and watched We are the Tigers to put me in a better mood), let’s finish this, ya’ll.Ĭassandra uses the spell to turn the ruins of Gothel’s tower into a fortress to attract Rapunzel’s attention as her group attempt to enter before Cassandra allows them at the Enchanted Girl’s request.
